The Ari's Text

And through the coupling of Aba with Ima, and the giving of their two drops, the seven kings were clarified and corrected, and from them went out 320 sparks of dross, which were not completed in their clarification. For in every phase and degree these 320 continue to be clarified, until the end of Assiya, where there remain in them complete dross of no use whatsoever, and these are the shells. Thus the whole matter is reckoned by the 320 sparks — for that was the number of the sparks that fell within the vessels when they broke.

1In every phase and degree these 320 continue to be clarified, until the end of Assiya, etc., for the whole matter is reckoned by the 320 sparks: As he explains, this was the number of the sparks that fell within the vessels when they broke. And it is known that the ten Sefirot are each included of one another, and therefore there is no phase that is clarified and rises out of BYA without all 320 sparks being included in it — for this very inclusion was the cause of their breaking, as will be explained below. Hence they need the couplings of AVI to clarify and separate from them the judgments and the dross that come from the mixture of the last thirty-two sparks, which are the discernment of the bottom Hey without the sweetening of the quality of mercy; and then they become fit for the clothing of the lights within them, as will be explained below.
