The Ari's Text

And this is what is said: 'the place where the beginning is found, from the Atik' — the place of the beginning of the revelation, which is found and descends from the Atik, where the bone spreads, as I explained. And this is through the hairs of the beard, which are called the Mazal, for through the Mazal the upper bone descends and shines to it. And this is 'that which is illuminated from the Mazal' — it is the radiance of the Hochma that afterward spreads in ZA into thirty-two parts. Or else, in it itself it spreads into thirty-two parts, for behold, the whiteness of the skull too spreads into thirteen parts, as above; and in ZA they become paths.

1Or else, in it itself it spreads into thirty-two parts, for behold, the whiteness of the skull too spreads into thirteen parts. Explanation: that at first he explained that he receives only the illumination of the Hochma of thirty-two paths, that is, the illumination of Hochma, and not the Hochma itself; for ZA receives mainly only from the two crowns, which are called Daat, and not from HB themselves, from whom he receives only an illumination and not the self, as is known. And now he explains the intention of the Zohar, that it is possible to say that the discernment of HB themselves also spreads in him, save that they come in the discernment of MaLTz [Mem-Lamed-Tzadi] of Tzelem [image], for his HB are clothed in the Mem, and the upper Daat in the Lamed, and the Daat that spreads, in the Tzadi. And upon this he brings a proof from the Galgalta of AA: that although from its own discernment it is only the Mem of Tzelem alone, nevertheless it spreads of itself into thirteen parts, which are the three HaVaYot of MaLTz, and one HaVaYaH that includes them, as is known. Behold, in this manner ZA too, although his own discernment is only the Tzadi of Tzelem, nevertheless he spreads of himself into all three discernments of MaLTz, whereby the self of HB too is found spreading in him, only under the covering of the Mem, which is the discernment of covered Hassadim, while the Lamed shines in him the illumination of Hochma. And understand well.
