Part 9 · Chapter 19

The Ari's Text

Understand this — what is the matter of the clothing of the soul, which is made of that Ruach [spirit] that he casts into her. It, too, is from the Hesed, in the secret of Eloha, except that it is from the RIU [216]. And perhaps this is why Eloha is MB [42], which is likewise Gevura. See the Zohar, Mishpatim.

1The Ruach that he casts into her, which is also from the Hesed, in the secret of Eloha, except that it is from the RIU: You already know that at the first intercourse — namely, when ZA bestows the Mochin of Gadlut upon the Nukva — he then gives her, in the vessel that raises the MAN, also the discernment of the first Ruach, called the Ruach that the husband casts into her, as above. For Bina and ZON of vessels that rise from BYA and join with the Nukva are called the vessel that raises the MAN — which is the discernment of the posterior of the name BON, whose Gematria is RIU. And the discernment of the lights within Bina and ZON that clothe within that vessel are SAG, MA, and BON, from the discernment of the HaVaYaH of AB whose Gematria is RIU; and these three [discernments of] AB are the discernment of the Ruach that he casts into her, as above. Therefore, from one side they are reckoned as Hesed, being that they come from the expansion of the Mochin from the illumination of AB; and from another side they are reckoned as Gevurot, being that they are only the lights of Bina and ZON, which are posterior and Gevura — and this is why they are called RIU, whose Gematria is Gevura, as is known. And this is what he said: that the clothing of the soul, which comes from that Ruach that the husband casts into her, is from the Hesed, in the secret of Eloha, and it is from Gevura because it is from the RIU — for the lights are the expansion of the Mochin of Gadlut, which are Hassadim and males; yet since they are attributed to and expand within the posterior vessels, Bina and ZON, they are therefore discerned as Gevurot — but as the discernment of the Gevurot within the Hassadim.
