And the root of the matter is that in the Yesod the upper male is concluded, and it is the firmament that separates between the waters and the waters. And the upper light that gives life to the Sefirot descends until there, and strikes it, in the secret of 'it struck it,' in the likeness of the polished mirror that stops, so that the light of the sun does not pass from it and below, for it stands opposite the light of the sun. So this firmament separates between the world of the male and the world of the female, and does not allow the light to pass below; and by this the secret of the upper light strikes within its internality, and sparks go out from it, as the number of the lights that strike it: nine from above downward, and nine from below upward.
