  1. *Know that AVI Ilain were made as follows: Aba, from the female, is the upper half of Bina of Mah; and Ima, from the male, is the entirety of Chochma of Ban. But this Chochma of Ban is called Ima, since it is the aspect of Ban; and the Bina of Mah is called Chochma, since it is of Mah. Understand this. It follows, then, that in truth both of them are called Chochma alone, and they are the aspect of the first Yod of the Name.

  1. 1This Hochma of BON is called Ima, since she is the discernment of BON: Meaning that although she is the discernment of true Hochma, that is, the second point of the GAR of Nekudim, nevertheless this rank of hers is not revealed in her at all; rather she is reckoned as the discernment of Bina, which is called Ima. This is because she is the discernment of BON, and she has no light of her own whatsoever, but only what the male gives her, who is the Bina of MA. Therefore the discernment of Hochma that is in her cannot be revealed, but only the discernment of Bina alone, that is, in the measure that the male, who is the Bina of MA, gives her. For this reason she is hinted at in the filling Vav and Dalet of the Yod of the name HaVaYaH, that is, in complete concealment, for only the measure of the male, which is the level of Bina, is revealed here, while his female’s measure, which is Hochma, is concealed and cannot be revealed, for the reason stated above.
  2. 2And the Bina of MA is called Hochma, since it is of MA: Meaning that it is the Hochma of the Bina of MA, and it is therefore called Hochma, since it is the Hochma of the level of Bina. From here come all the discernments of Hochma that there are in AVI, since it is the discernment of MA, which is the one that bestows upon Ima. Therefore, although there is also the ZAT of true Hochma in the Partzufim of AVI, nevertheless it is not counted in the name, since it is of the discernment of BON, and it has nothing except what MA gives it, as above.
You must have fluently at your command the order of the division of MA and BON among the four Partzufim, AVI and YESHSUT, which the ARI brings here. They are four pairs. The first pair is the Keter Hochma of the Bina of MA together with the ZA of the Hochma of BON, where the Keter and Hochma of the Bina of MA are called Aba, who is the male, and the ZA of the Hochma of BON is called Ima, who is the female. The male is the secret of the Yod of the name HaVaYaH, and the female is the secret of the filling Vav and Dalet in the Yod, whose measure is concealed and is not revealed, as above. The two of them together are regarded by the name Aba alone, since they are two Hochmot: the Hochma of the Bina of MA, and the true Hochma of BON, that is, the ZA of the second point of the GAR of Nekudim. And these clothe AA on the right side, from the Chazeh upward.
The second pair is the Bina of the Bina of MA together with the five Sefirot Gevura, Tifferet, Netzah, Hod and Yesod of the Bina of BON, that is, of the third point of the GAR of Nekudim. The Bina of the Bina of MA is the male, and the five Sefirot of the Bina of BON are the female. These two, male and female together, are regarded by the name Ima, since both of them are the discernment of Bina; for the male is the Bina of the Bina of MA, and the female is the five Sefirot Gevura, Tifferet and NHY of the Bina of BON, and therefore both of them are called by the name Bina, or Ima. They clothe the left side of AA, from the Chazeh upward to the throat. The male is called by the name Israel Saba and the female is called by the name Tevuna. However, in relation to the lower YESHSUT, the second pair is called by the name the upper Ima, or Bina; whereas in relation to the first pair, the male and female of the second pair are regarded by the name Israel Saba and Tevuna.
The third pair is the ZA of the Bina of MA together with the Malchut of the Hochma of BON. The ZA of the Bina of MA is the male, and the Malchut of the Hochma of BON is the female. The two of them together are regarded by the name Israel Saba, that is, after the ZA of Bina, which is always called Israel Saba, as is known that ZA is called Israel and the ZA of Bina is called Israel Saba. They clothe the right side of AA from the Chazeh downward to the Tabur of AA.
The fourth pair is the Malchut of the Bina of MA together with the Malchut of the Bina of BON, where the Malchut of the Bina of MA is the male and the Malchut of the Bina of BON is the female. This male and female are sometimes called YESHSUT, and both of them are regarded by the name Tevuna. They clothe the left side of AA from the Chazeh downward to the Tabur of AA.
In truth, all four of the said pairs are but one pair, being the ZAT of HB of BON, which were corrected with the level of the Bina of the new MA, as above (page 628, the passage beginning “And since”); for the males of the ten Sefirot in the level of the Bina of MA correct the ZAT of the Hochma of BON. Aba and ZA in the ten Sefirot of the Bina of MA, which are males, correct the ZAT of the Hochma of BON, which is likewise a male, and therefore they clothe the right side of AA from the throat to the Tabur. And the females in the ten Sefirot of the Bina of MA, which are the Ima and the Nukva in them, correct the six lower ones of the Bina of BON, which is likewise a female, and therefore they clothe the left side of AA from the throat to the Tabur. However, because of the screen of the Yesod of Atik that is clothed in AA down to the Chazeh, which conceals and covers the GAR of the level of the Bina of MA so that the illumination of Hochma shall not be revealed there, as written in its place, the level of the Bina of MA was divided into two degrees, GAR and ZAT. The GAR were made into a special Partzuf, which clothes from the Chazeh upward to the throat of AA, and they are called the upper AVI, where the Aba of MA and the ZA of the Hochma and BON clothe the right side, and the Ima of MA and the five Sefirot Gevura, Tifferet and NHY of the Bina of BON clothe the left side of AA from the Chazeh upward.
And from the place of the Sium of the screen of the Yesod of Atik downward, that is, from the Chazeh of AA downward, stand the ZAT of the level of the Bina of MA, which were made into a special Partzuf so that the illumination of Hochma should be revealed in them, and they are called YESHSUT. There the ZA of the Bina of MA and the Malchut of the Hochma of BON clothe the right side from the Chazeh of AA downward to the Tabur, and the Malchut of the Bina of MA together with the Malchut of the Bina of BON clothe the left side of AA from the Chazeh downward to the Tabur.
