  1. And the benefit of the ascent — its matter is to renew those souls, and to give them power, and to shine in them. And the matter of this renewal is what renews and corrects his Mochin, which is the aspect of his soul that sits in the brain, as is known. And likewise ZA and his Nukva, the sons of AVI, ascend in the secret of MAN upward into AVI, in order to renew their Mochin and to add illumination in them. And this ascent is what is called the second Ibur of the Mochin of birth. And understand this.

  1. 1 And this ascent is what is called the second Ibur of the Mochin of birth: Now the ARI is dealing here with the ascent of the MAN of the night, of the soul of the righteous and of ZON, for this ascent of MAN is only to make a vessel in the first union for AVI and ZON, as is written above in Part 12, in the ARI’s words, item 139 — see there — and is not at all for the sake of Ibur for actual Mochin of birth; rather, by day, in the Shema of Shaharit there is a coupling of AVI for Mochin of birth, and in Sim Shalom there is the coupling of ZON for Mochin of birth, as is written at length. Accordingly, how does the ARI say here that in the ascent of MAN of the night it is the second Ibur for Mochin of birth?
However, you will see that the ARI is precise there in saying, of the MAN of the night, that it is not for the purpose of birth “actually.” And the meaning is that they are indeed for the purpose of birth, but not for its completion, for that is done by day, in the Shema and in Sim Shalom. And the matter is that the ARI divides the Iburim of ZA mainly into two discernments: first Ibur and second Ibur. The first Ibur includes the two levels of Ibur and nursing, until the end of the two years of nursing, called Nefesh-Ruach of ZA. And the second Ibur includes all the discernments of GAR of ZA, beginning from the GAR of Ruach, called Mochin of VAK, until the GAR of the completion of the Mochin, called the third Ibur.
And indeed, every coupling of the upper one for the sake of the lower one is called Ibur, and there are many discernments of it, both in the first Ibur and in the second and in the third. But the main distinction in the general name of the two Iburim is according to the distinction between two kinds of sortings: one is for the sorting of the anterior vessels from the broken vessels that are in BYA, called GE, which are regarded as the vessels of HBD-HGT of ZA down to the Chazeh [chest], as they came out in Nekudim in the first two divisions, called back to back and face to back — for their AHP, meaning from the Chazeh downward, were then still in BYA — and this is what is sorted out in all the couplings of the first Ibur and nursing, until the end of two years, and is included under the name first Ibur.
However, the second Ibur is for the sorting of the posterior vessels from the broken vessels in BYA, called AHP, which are regarded as the vessels of NHY of ZA from the Chazeh downward, whose sorting begins after two years and one day, when ZA ascends to the second Ibur, to receive the illumination of AB and SAG that brings the bottom Hey down from the Einayim to the mouth; through this the vessels of AHP of every lower one are raised and return to their degree in the upper one, as before the breaking, until even the AHP of ZON that are in BYA rise together with the soul of the righteous and come to the degree of ZON; and then ZON is completed in the discernment of vessels, for it has attained NHY, which are the AHP that it lacked, and it can receive the GAR of lights. But these degrees of GAR enter little by little, and now, while it is in the first union, it receives only the discernment of the vessel that raises MAN, and the discernment of the GAR of Ruach, which includes the surrounding lights of AVI, and the VAK of Gadlut of Ima — this being the beginning of the Mochin of birth. And afterward, after nine years, it receives the VAK and GAR of the Mochin of birth, until thirteen years and one day, and the surrounding lights of ML of Tzelem [image] of AVI, until the completion of twenty years, as is written before us. Thus the sortings of the posterior vessels begin after the two years of nursing, and are completed at twenty years, all of which is regarded as Mochin of birth.
And with this you will also understand here, that the ARI opened with the Mochin of birth that come after nine years and one day, as is written in item 2, and concluded with the MAN of the night, which is only for the discernment of the vessel and the Rucha, and not for the discernment of the Neshama, as is written here, items 14 and 15, that these Mochin come to ZA after the two years of nursing. And understand this together with the above, that the Mochin that are sorted through the raising of AHP are all regarded as Mochin of birth, and are included under the name second Ibur, which begin with the vessel and the Rucha that come in the first union, and are completed by thirteen years and one day from the discernment of the inner ones, and by twenty years from the discernment of the surrounding ones. Therefore it makes no difference between them, and it includes them together.
