  1. And this is their matter. Know that this surrounding light of the sixth aspect resembles the surrounding light of the fourth aspect. For that surrounding light surrounds opposite the NHY of Ima, within which the Mochin of ZA are clothed within; and it is above the head of ZA, surrounding his entire head and skull and all the inner Mochin within it. But this surrounding light of the sixth aspect goes out from the illumination of the inner Mochin within the head itself of ZA; and if it goes out from the Mochin and is inferior to them, how can it surround them in the aspect of surrounding light, which is greater than the inner light? Therefore it does not surround except the aspect of the face of ZA alone, and it goes out from the forehead, between the eyes, and from there it stands and surrounds the face beneath the eyes; and they are the aspect of Tefillin literally. And this is what is said in Idra de Haazinu, page 292: "And his face shone, and he testified in Aba and Ima," etc. And this is the secret of "And they shall be for frontlets between your eyes."

  1. 1This surrounding light of the sixth discernment goes out from the illumination of the inner Mochin of ZA, etc., and it is inferior to them, etc.; and therefore it surrounds only the discernment of the face of ZA. It has already been explained above, in Part 13, that the Mem of the Mochin shines in the circumference of the Galgalta of the head, where the hairs take hold; and the Lamed of the Mochin shines only in the face of the head, that is, from the forehead downward, after the growth of the hairs has ceased. And the reason of the matter is that in the Mem of the Mochin, which stands always in the discernment of the air — since the Yod does not come out of its air — there is therefore a permanent grip for the hairs there. This is not so with the Lamed of the Mochin: for at a time of favor the Yod descends from the air, and then there is no grip there for the hairs, which are judgments, as is known. And therefore the discernment of the hairs was corrected there only in the manner of covering and revealing: that in Katnut [smallness/infancy] the hairs cover the face, and at a time of favor the thirteen Chivaret [bright strands] shine within the thirteen Nimin [strands], and then the Nimin depart from upon the forehead and the face, as above (page 1368, item 156); for then the Yod descends from the Avir [air] and Or [light] remains. And therefore there is no permanent grip for the hairs there, as there is in the Galgalta, which is the Mem of Tzelem [image].
And it was explained above (on page 1577, the passage beginning “And with this”) that even the illumination of the upper surrounding light, by way of the flashing, does not reach the Mem of the Mochin, which are the discernment of the Galgalta, but only the Lamed of the Mochin, which are the discernment of the air. See there. And this is what the ARI says: that the surrounding light of the sixth discernment is inferior to the inner Mochin, and that it surrounds only the face of ZA alone. For this surrounding light of the sixth discernment comes from the portion of the Hassadim that is in the brain of the air, within which is the illumination of Hochma by way of striking, which could not be in the internality because of the restriction of the Hassadim of the Galgalta, and they went outside upon the forehead, as above (page 1577, the passage beginning “And with this”), study it there well. Thus they come as the discernment of a portion and a branch of the brain of the air; therefore their illumination reaches no further than to remove the hairs from upon the forehead and the Einayim — for before the illumination of the surrounding lights the hairs covered their Einayim, so that neither AA would look at ZA nor ZA at his Nukva, as above (page 1361, item 140) — and now the hairs have departed and the Einayim have been revealed, and ZA is able to look at the forehead of AA, as above. And this revelation has no place except in the face of ZA, where the place of the illumination of the Lamed of Tzelem is; and it has no place of revelation above the forehead, which is the Galgalta, for there is the rule of the Mem of Tzelem, from which the Yod never comes out of the air. As written in Part 13, see there.
And this is what the ARI concludes: “and it goes out from the forehead, between the Einayim, and from there it stands and surrounds the face that is beneath the Einayim, and they are the discernment of Tefillin; and this is the secret of ‘And they shall be for frontlets between your eyes.’” For all this is the revelation of the illumination of Hochma, which is called Einayim; and therefore the verse makes the discernment of the Tefillin depend on the secret of “between your eyes.” And so our sages expounded on the verse “And all the peoples of the earth shall see that the name of the Lord is called upon you,” etc., that these are the Tefillin of the head; for all their illumination depends on sight, since Hochma is called sight, as is known. And with this you will understand the secret of the Tefillin of the hand, which must be covered: it is because they are the sixth discernment of the Nukva, who is drawn from the upper surrounding light of the knot of the Tefillin of the head; and it was explained above that she is the discernment of the screens that are in the Yesod of the Mochin, upon which the coupling by striking is made, which is the secret of the sheath, study it there well. And therefore the whole essence of this surrounding light depends upon the covering, for then there is a coupling by striking that reveals the illumination of Hochma through the level of the revealed AB, as above. So that the covering of the Tefillin of the hand causes the entire revelation of the Tefillin of the head, as explained. And see above, page 1551, the passage beginning “Indeed,” study it there well.
