  1. And behold, you know that in every Sefirah there is Panim and Achor in the aspect of letters and not in the aspect of number; and opposite it, Achor and Panim in the aspect of number. It follows, therefore, that all the aspects of the Achoraim of the number belong to the female clinging to the male, which are the Achoraim of the letters; and they are back to back. And the Panim of the number on one side, and the Panim of the letters on the other side, they do not yet have at all, only the two backs alone. And at the time of the sawing, the Achoraim of the number are sawed from the Achoraim of the aspect of letters.

  1. 1The posteriors of the number belong to the female who cleaves to the male, which are the posteriors of the letters, and they are back to back; and the anterior of the number on one side and the anterior of the letters on the other side they do not have, etc. For there are four degrees in every Sefira, which are: the anterior and posterior of the letters, and the number of the anterior and the number of the posteriors. For example, the Partzuf ZA is HaVaYaH of MA. Behold, his Keter is the four simple letters, which are Yod-Hey-Vav-Hey. And the discernment of the anterior of the Keter of ZA is the name HaVaYaH in its simple form, which are the nine Sefirot of the Keter: YH is KHB, and VH are HGT NHY. And the number of the simple HaVaYaH, which is 26, is the anterior of the Malchut of the Keter. And the posterior of the Keter of ZA is the simple HaVaYaH in square, which is: Yod; YH; YHV; HaVaYaH — these being the nine Sefirot of the posterior of the Keter of ZA; and the Malchut of the posterior of the Keter of ZA is the number of the aforementioned HaVaYaH in square, which is AB [72].
And the Hochma of ZA is HaVaYaH with the filling of MA: Yod-Vav-Dalet, Hey-Aleph, Vav-Aleph-Vav, Hey-Aleph — these being the nine Sefirot of the anterior of the Hochma of ZA; and the Malchut of the anterior is the number of these ten letters, which is MA [45]. And the nine Sefirot of the posterior of the Hochma of ZA are the aforementioned HaVaYaH with the filling, in square: Yod-Vav-Dalet; Yod-Vav-Dalet, Hey-Aleph; Yod-Vav-Dalet, Hey-Aleph, Vav-Aleph-Vav; Yod-Vav-Dalet, Hey-Aleph, Vav-Aleph-Vav, Hey-Aleph. And the Malchut of the posterior of the Hochma of MA is their number, of the 26 letters of the aforementioned square.
And the Bina of ZA is HaVaYaH with the filling of the filling of MA, which are 28 letters, and they are the nine Sefirot of the anterior of the Bina of ZA. And the Malchut of the anterior is the number of the 28 letters; and the nine Sefirot of the posterior are the square of HaVaYaH with the filling of the filling, which are 156 letters. And the Malchut of the posterior of the Bina of ZA is the Gematria of the 156 letters.
And the ZA of ZA is equal, in all four degrees, to the Hochma of ZA: the nine Sefirot of the anterior are HaVaYaH with the filling of MA, and the Malchut is their count; and the nine Sefirot of the posterior are the 26 letters of the square of HaVaYaH with the filling of MA, and the Malchut is their count. However, a distinct discernment of Malchut does not come into the count of the four degrees, for there are in ZA only nine Sefirot, and the separated Nukva completes him to ten, as is known. And the separated Nukva has ten Sefirot of her own in the discernment of HaVaYaH with the filling of BON, in each of which there are four degrees. And see in Etz Chaim, Gate 14, MA, where Rav Chaim Vital brings two opinions on this; and from most of the places in the words of the ARI it appears that it is according to the first opinion. Study it there well.
And according to this it is found that at the time when ZON are back to back from the Chazeh [chest] downward, there are in ZON only the discernment of HaVaYaH in square of the filling of MA, and their count. For ZA is the discernment of the 26 letters of the HaVaYaH of MA in square, that is, the discernment of the posterior of the ZA of ZA, which is his VAK; and the Nukva is the discernment of the count of these 26 letters. But the discernment of the anterior of the VAK of ZA they do not yet have, that is, the ten letters of the HaVaYaH with the filling of MA in straightness, and the number of these ten letters, that is, the Gematria MA, which is the Malchut of the anterior of the discernment of VAK — all this is still lacking in them at the time when they are back to back from the Chazeh downward. For there is in them only the discernment of the posterior alone; and not complete ten Sefirot of the posterior, but only the discernment of VAK of the posterior.
And all this is spoken of the Nukva within the Guf of ZA, that is, of the Malchuts of his nine Sefirot, which are nothing but counts, either of the anterior or of the posterior, as above. However, the separated Nukva herself is the discernment of the HaVaYaH of BON, in each of whose ten Sefirot there are the four degrees, the anterior and posterior and their count, as the ARI wrote in Gate 18, Chapter 2. See there. But it has already been explained above that all the discernments in the Nukva within the Guf of ZA pass over to the separated Nukva through the sawing. And likewise, even while she is back to back with ZA from the Chazeh downward, in one wall with ZA, she is compelled to make use of the Nukva within the Guf of ZA that is there, since she has no discernment of a posterior of her own, as above. And therefore he explains here all the discernments of the Nukva within the Guf of ZA that pass over to the separated Nukva, who is the HaVaYaH of BON, at the time of the sawing and also at the time when she is face to face.
  2. 2The posteriors of the number are sawn from the posteriors of the discernment of his letters. For then the Nukva takes all the discernments of the posterior of the Nukva within the Guf of ZA, from the Keter of ZA to the Malchut within him, that is: the number of the discernments of the posterior of the Keter, which is AB [72]; and the number of the 26 letters of the square of the HaVaYaH of MA, which is the posterior of the Hochma; and the number of the 156 letters of the filling of the filling of the HaVaYaH of MA, which is the posterior of the Bina; and the number of the 26 letters of the HaVaYaH of MA, which is the posterior of the ZA of ZA, as above in the adjacent item. And all these are sawn from ZA and given to the Nukva.
