Here he says that the firmaments are externality, and likewise in Gate 49, Chapter 1, and these are his words: “And the nearest, agreed, and true is thus, that the externality is the world itself, which are the firmaments and the lands, etc.” But in Etz Chaim, Gate 43, Chapter 2, he says, and these are his words: “And know that these firmaments are all in the secret of the circles of Assiya.” And likewise in Chapter 1 there he says, and these are his words: “This globe of the earth, etc., is vessels of Assiya, etc., from the discernment of the inner light of straightness, and afterward the heavens and the firmaments that are upon this earth surround, which is the discernment of the surrounding light of straightness of Assiya, and other heavens surround them, which are the surrounding light of the circles of Assiya.” Study it there well. Thus it is explained that the firmaments are not external vessels, but are surrounding vessels of circles and of the surrounding lights of straightness.

But these firmaments and palaces, called external vessels, are from the discernment of the ZON that separated from the ten Sefirot of the Guf [body], and therefore they are not fit to be surrounding vessels in whose interior actual surrounding light would clothe.
