And we shall begin with the matter of the nine discernments of essence, which are three of three of three. And the reason they are three discernments is, because it was already explained by us that in every discernment of upper lights there are three discernments: the first is the inner light, and over it there is a light higher than it, called the surrounding light upon it, and over them a light higher and greater than both of them, and it surrounds both of them.
