And we will now explain the order of their division: behold, their beginning was from below upward, and they began to be corrected from the aspect of the two thousand years of the world of Assiya. And since the root of all the Klipot is in Assiya, therefore [that period] is called "two thousand years of chaos" (Tohu) — for Tohu is the aspect of the Klipot, by the secret of "and the earth was chaos." Therefore most of those generations were wicked: the generation of Enosh, the generation of the Flood, the generation of the Dispersion, the people of Sodom, and the like.
