And these nine first Sefirot are called the head, which lies in the dust, for it is placed among the Klipot, in the secret of the dust of the Tabernacle. But her last aspect, called the tail, alone remained in Atzilut, and it is she who rules now, at the time of the exile. And therefore the nations of the world, which are the tail, have the upper hand in this exile, because they are nourished from the tail which rules now. But Israel, which is the head, is nourished from the head. And behold, the head lies in the dust, therefore Israel, in this exile, are subdued and low under the nations, which is called the tail.

At first glance it should have been the opposite: that through the discernment of Malchut that remained in Atzilut, Israel should have been strengthened through her, and from the nine first ones that fell into the shells, the nations of the world should have taken strength to rule over Israel in the exile. However, there is depth in these matters. For it has already been explained that this point that remained in Atzilut is the secret of the point of the Chazeh [chest] of the ZAT of Nekudim, which is the point of the Sium of the second restriction, that was made at the time of the emergence of the Katnut [smallness/infancy] of Nekudim, because of the ascent of the concluding Malchut of the first restriction to the place of the Chazeh of the Partzuf of the Nekudot of SAG, so that therefore from the Chazeh and below was made into a vacant space, as above in the words of the ARI (page 1889, item 3). It was also explained that the cause of the breaking of the vessels was that they crossed the aforementioned boundary and came to BYA, and therefore the force of the concluding Malchut that is in the point of the Chazeh became mixed in the kings, and therefore the upper light departed from them and they died.
And it was explained above, page 1942, the passage beginning “And with this,” that therefore there are two discernments in the breaking of the vessels, which are: 288 sparks, and the heart of stone — for the discernment of the nine first ones of the kings that were broken is the discernment of the 288 sparks, which are fit to be sorted for holiness. But all the discernments of the Malchuts in the kings, which are thirty-two Malchuts, upon which the force of the concluding Malchut of the first restriction rides, became shells that are not fit for anything. And they have no sorting during the six thousand years, until the future to come, when it is said, “And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh,” and then death will be swallowed up forever. Study it there well.
And behold, the entire building of the Nukva of ZA of Atzilut is through the 288 sparks, and from them are all her nine Sefirot, which are called the head. For from the heart of stone there are none that are sortings. And by reason of the sin of Adam HaRishon, her head fell into the shells. And she remained only in the point of the Chazeh, which from the discernment of the vessels is the discernment of the Keter within her, and from the discernment of the lights is the discernment of the Malchut within her, as above. And behold, then she is called a black point that has no whiteness in it at all, and this is because from this discernment she has no sorting at all, for there she is the discernment of the concluding Malchut, who is not built except through the sortings of the heart of stone; and therefore she is black, because the discernment of white and illumination does not apply there until the end of correction, as above. And all her building is through ZA, her husband, in the secret of “and the Lord God built the rib,” etc., which is the secret of the 288 that she attains from the Mochin of AVI, which are called the head.
And this is what the ARI hints (in item 238) regarding the verse “She has fallen and will not rise again,” which is the matter of the tail and the head. For the Zohar explained this verse: that “she has fallen and will not rise again” by herself, but her husband is the one who raises her up. And it is as above, for from her own discernment she is black, being the point of the Sium, where the root of the heart of stone is, which has no sorting; and therefore she will not rise again by herself, and only ZA her husband is the one who raises her up through the Mochin of the upper AVI, in the secret of the sortings of the 288 sparks, as above. And the ARI hints at this, that it is the matter of the tail and the head — that is, that her own discernment, of which it is said “she has fallen and will not rise again,” is the matter of the tail; and the discernment of her building, whereby ZA raises her up, is the matter of the head, that is, as explained.
And this is what he says: “And therefore the nations of the world, who are the tail, have the upper hand in this exile, because they are nourished from the tail that rules now, but Israel, who are the head, are nourished from the head,” that is, as above, that the whole force of the shells’ rule to cause Israel to sin is through the aforementioned heart of stone, for from this discernment she is black and has no whiteness in her at all until the end of correction. And the whole salvation of Israel is to raise MAN [Mayin Nukvin] in the secret of the 288 sparks and to build her a complete building at the level of AVI, for then she is the moon in her completeness, as it was in the days of Solomon, at the time of the building of the First Temple. And it turns out that in the destruction of the Temple the nine first ones fell into the shells, and there remained for Israel only the discernment of the tail; therefore the nations of the world have the strength to rule over Israel, because from this discernment there are no sortings until the end of correction. And therefore Israel in this exile are subdued and low under the idol worshippers, who are called the tail. For all their power to cause Israel to sin is from the power of the tail, which is the secret of the heart of stone, as explained.
