  1. This is what is written in The Zohar, parashat Balak, p 203: "'I behold him [Ashurenu], but not near' — since he was in his mother's innards, Ashurenu; he extended a step outward [Pesia LeVar]," etc. — derived from "if my step [Ashuri] has turned out of Your way," the language of a step. The matter is that at the time of the first Ibur [conception], ZON [Zeir Anpin and Nukva] were in the discernment of the small Vav within the first Hey of the Name. That Vav inside the Hey has no head, for ZA was still only in a discernment of VAK [six ends] without a head. Moreover, they are not a large Vav, in which each of the six ends would be revealed; rather, the three were incorporated in the three, as above, for this is the very purpose of the correction during the time of the Ibur. Therefore it is a small Vav, half the measure of the letter Vav, and it is called the small Vav. And then, at the end of this Vav, in its middle line, Malchut was clothing the end of that line, and there she was in the discernment of that lower tip that protrudes slightly outward from the end of this letter Vav. This is what is called Pesia LeVar [a step outward], since it is at the end of the leg of this Vav, protruding slightly outward — so that the thickness of three points would be there, unlike the two other lines.

  1. 1Pesia LeVar [a step outward]: Meaning, this is the first correction of Malchut, which she receives in the secret of the Ibur, in the innards of Ima: for she is incorporated in the Gevurot of the Yesod, called Pesia LeVar. For it has been clarified above that Bina’s expansion reaches only until Hod, and the vessel of Yesod is already found outside of Bina; and the Yesod lacks Hassadim, yet it has no deficiency at all with regard to Hochma. Therefore it is regarded by the name “narrow and long”: for it is very narrow because of the lack of Hassadim, but it is long in Hochma, for it has no deficiency at all in the discernment of the light of Hochma.
As written above (Part Seven, page 499, the passage beginning “And the matter”): therefore now, at the time of the Ibur, when the Atara, which is Malchut, rose and clothed the Yesod and received his measure — namely, was incorporated in him, as above — Malchut is found to have received the Gevurot of the Yesod, namely, the discernment of the Pesia LeVar from the Bina in him, which is the lack of Hassadim, as above. But this is a very great sweetening for Malchut, for together with this she also receives from him the completeness of the Hochma in him, for this alone is what she needs.
This is what is said in The Zohar: “since he was in his mother’s innards, Ashurenu, he extended a step outward [Pesia LeVar]” — meaning, these Gevurot of the Yesod, which are the discernment of his going out from within the expansion of Bina, who is Ima, were not discernible in the Yesod at the time when all the vessels of ZA lacked light; but after he rose to Bina in the secret of the Ibur, then the discernment of the Pesia LeVar from Bina that is found in the Yesod became discernible. For all of them received the light of Bina in the innards of Bina, except for the Yesod, which was there in the discernment of a step outward from her — meaning, that it could not receive the Hassadim within her. And this is what it means, “since he was in his mother’s innards” — that he rose in the secret of the Ibur — “then Ashurenu,” meaning that Bina pushes him away in the secret of a step outward, and does not reach him to bestow upon him her lights as she does upon the other Sefirot. And the ARI says that the aforesaid discernment of the Pesia LeVar found in the Yesod was received by Malchut, who is the Atara, through her incorporation in him, and her clothing of him.
  2. 2Half the measure of the letter Vav, and it is called the small Vav: Meaning, that the Vav, which is ZA, comprises VAK, which are HGT and NHY; HGT are the KHB within the Hassadim, and NHY are the discernments of ZON within the Hassadim, as is known. HGT are regarded as the discernment of the Rosh, since they are the KHB in him, and NHY are the discernment of the Guf in him.
This is what is meant by “that Vav within the Hey” — meaning, at the time that ZA, who is the secret of the Vav, is in the Ibur within the Hey, who is Ima, “he has no head,” for then NHY are incorporated in HGT, and the greatness of HGT, which is the discernment of the Rosh, cannot be discerned, for the Guf and the Rosh are incorporated one in the other. “For this is the very purpose of the correction during the time of the Ibur” — namely, as above, that all that is now intended from the Ibur is nothing more than to again join the discernment of the bottom Hey with the first Hey, meaning that HGT would receive into themselves the discernments of NHY, in the secret of the bottom Hey in the Nikvey Einayim, in order to partner the quality of mercy in judgment, as above. Therefore the discernments of HGT are now regarded as though they were NHY, for the Atara, which is the bottom Hey, rose and was incorporated in the Tifferet, which is Bina. Thus the greatness of the Tifferet is found to be like that of the Yesod, for the Atara is now incorporated and cleaves to the Tifferet; and likewise in the extremities, according to their measure. Thus HGT received the form of NHY; therefore the Vav, which is ZA, is regarded as lacking the discernment of the HGT in him, namely the discernment of the Rosh, which are KHB. Understand this. “Therefore it is a small Vav, half the measure of the letter Vav” — namely, only NHY alone, which is half of the VAK, since it lacks HGT.
  3. 3At the end of this Vav, etc., she was in the discernment of the lower tip: Namely, as above: for this Vav is only half the measure, which is NHY. And the lower tip in it, which is the Yesod, is found to protrude slightly outward from the end of the letter Vav — meaning that while he is in the innards of Bina, Bina does not reach him so as to be able to bestow upon him from her lights, and he protrudes outward from her. And the Atara clothes that outward point, as above, and she receives from him a great sweetening.
