Yet you must know that the sparks that are clarified and rise in the discernment of MAN [Mayin Nukvin] by the sons who raise them — since of themselves they can rise only from the second time onward, as said above — those MAN are not completed immediately then, nor do they come at once to correction. Rather, at first, at the first time, the MAN rose to AVI [Aba ve Ima] not by means of ZON [Zeir Anpin and Nukva], and from those MAN the discernment of ZON was made. And after ZON was corrected, then, at the second time, they raised other MAN and other sparks up to the upper Ima; and then those sparks joined together and were there in the belly of the upper Ima, but the form of the newborn could not be corrected and depicted from them, for they had then just come out from within the Klipot [shells]. Rather, they returned with ZON, and all of them together rose again to raise other MAN a second time; and then, since they had already tarried there that length of time, they can be corrected — and then they are depicted and come out. And those MAN return and raise, with the joining of ZON, other MAN, and then those are depicted and corrected. And so it proceeds in this way always.

1At the first time the MAN rose not by means of ZON, etc.; at the second time they raised other MAN, etc.: It has already been explained that there is no one who can raise MAN for the completion of the upper one except the lower one close to it. It follows that AVI cannot be completed with their Gadlut except by the rising of ZON to them in MAN. Yet it is known that before AVI attain their Gadlut, there is not yet any existence at all for ZON, for even the discernment of the Ibur [impregnation] of ZON has not yet come out, as said above. So then there is no one to raise the MAN to AVI — that is, the AHP lacking to them — in order to complete them with the ten Sefirot in fullness, as said above. (In the Inner Light, item 5, the passage beginning “AA.”) This is what the ARI says: “Rather, at first, at the first time, the MAN rose to AVI not by means of ZON” — that is, as explained, since ZON do not yet exist in the world to whom the MAN could rise. Therefore it is necessary that the MAN rise of themselves, not by means of ZON.
Yet one must understand well how it is possible for the MAN to rise of themselves, and what causes their rising to AVI, for this knowledge is the axis on which all the matters of MAN revolve. Now the ARI has laid down a rule for us in several places, that every lower one raises the MAN belonging to its upper one to the Partzuf that is above the upper one — that is, to the third degree — and the one above the upper one corrects them on behalf of the upper one. Thus three degrees join together in the raising of MAN. And this needs to be understood. The matter is that after AVI were corrected the first time by AA — that is, in the discernment of their Katnut — they are then already fit to rise in MAN to AA, and they return to being AVI of AA face to face, as said above (page 628, the passage beginning “And after”). Now, by the illumination of the coupling of Aba and Ima face to face, the bottom Hey descends from the discernment of the Einayim of AVI and prepares the AHP vessels to return to the degree of AVI, and then ZON rise in the discernment of MAN and complete the vessels of AVI. So that at the time AVI rise in MAN to AA, they carry within them all the records of posteriors that fell from all the Partzufim of Nekudim, as said above (In the Inner Light, Part 8, item 1, the passage beginning “returned”). Study it there well. And all the couplings are made primarily upon the discernment of the records, and after the records are corrected, they impart their correction to the vessels attributed to them, as is known. Therefore, after the coupling of AVI of AA face to face was made, and the bottom Hey was brought down from the Einayim of the discernments of the records to the Peh of the records included in AVI, it is regarded as though ZON themselves rose and were included in the coupling, even though they themselves had not yet been emanated — for the records of AHP included in AVI, as said above, are the discernments of ZON, only they are included in AVI in the discernment of records, as explained. It is found here that the records of GE of ZON raised the AHP of the upper one, who is AVI, to the one above the upper one, who is AA, on behalf of the upper one — that is, to complete the GAR of AVI.
Thus it has been explained that it is essentially AVI who rise in MAN, since they are already corrected in the discernment of their Katnut. It has also been explained that all the records of the lower ones are included in AVI, and consequently also the records of ZON; and it is these records of ZON that are found in AVI without correction that cause AVI to rise in MAN to AA. This is regarded as the MAN rising of themselves — that is, by means of their inclusion in AVI.
2From that MAN, the discernment of ZON was made: For that MAN included in AVI, which are the records of AHP that fell from them to ZON, as said above in the adjacent item, is composed of two discernments: the first is the discernment of the Sefirot of AHP that fell from AVI and became the discernments of ZON; and the second is the discernment of ZON themselves, into whom the AHP of AVI fell. Now, before their correction they are one discernment and one degree — namely, only the degree of ZON — for the upper one that comes to the place of the lower one becomes like it. But after they rose in MAN together with AVI to AA, as said above, and MAD descended upon them there, bringing down the bottom Hey from the Einayim and returning the AHP of AVI to their own degree, then the AHP divide into two degrees: their internality joins with AVI and completes the vessels of Bina and ZON that were lacking to them, together with their lights of GAR. But their externality, which was at first the portion of ZON, certainly cannot join with the Sefirot of AVI, for that MAD, which suffices to bring down the bottom Hey from the Einayim of AVI, does not suffice to bring down the bottom Hey from the Einayim of the discernment of ZON, because the restriction that rides upon the AHP of ZON is far harder than the restriction that rides upon the AHP of AVI. Therefore only the discernments of the anterior vessels of ZON, which are GE, can receive correction from this coupling of the Gadlut of AVI, since relative to them they are the discernment of the Rosh; but the posterior vessels, which are AHP, cannot receive any correction from there. This is what he says: “And then from that MAN the discernment of ZON was made.” That is, from that MAN that rose with AVI to their coupling of Gadlut, the discernment of the Katnut of ZON was also corrected from them — namely, the discernment of their anterior vessels, which are GE, from which the discernment of the Ibur of ZON comes out. So that two discernments were corrected from the MAN that rose with AVI: the first is the completion of the ten Sefirot of vessels and Mochin of AVI themselves, and the second is the discernment of the Katnut of ZON.
3At the second time they raised other MAN and other sparks, up to the upper Ima: That is, as said above in the adjacent item, and as said regarding AVI. For after ZON received their correction by the coupling of the Gadlut of AVI, by which the discernment of the Katnut of ZON was corrected, as said above, then ZON too can rise in MAN to AVI by their own force, and it is regarded that they take with them the records of the AHP vessels that fell from them into the discernments of the Nefesh, Ruach and Neshama of the righteous — that is, in the same way explained above regarding the rising of AVI in MAN to AA. See there. For these records are included in ZON. It follows that at the time ZON rise in MAN to AVI, they take and raise with them other MAN as well, and other sparks — namely, those belonging to the Nefesh, Ruach and Neshama of the righteous.
4In the belly of the upper Ima, and the form of the newborn could not be corrected and depicted from them: Belly is the secret of the AHP of the Guf — that is, from the Chazeh [chest] downward — namely, the AHP of Tevuna, which is the Guf of AVI. For at first the coupling is made upon the MAN for the sake of ZON themselves, which is the first discernment included in the MAN that ZON raised to AVI, and therefore the MAD reach to complete the MAN they raised, and to return the discernments of the AHP of the discernments of ZON to complete the vessels and Mochin of their own Gadlut. But the second discernment included in the MAN, which are the records of GE of the Nefesh, Ruach and Neshama of the righteous, still cannot receive anything from the discernment of that MAD, for they are not of their discernment. This is what he says: “And the form of the newborn could not be corrected and depicted from them, for they had just come out from within the Klipot” — that is, although in truth the MAN of the souls of the righteous are included in the AHP of ZON, which had already received their correction in the belly of the upper Ima, nevertheless, since the coupling does not pertain to them, they need a special coupling of their own, to correct their GE, in the discernment of the Ibur, as stated.
5They returned with ZON, and all of them together rose again to raise other MAN a second time: For after the coupling and birth of the Gadlut of ZON is completed, and ZON return to their place, then the coupling is made upon that MAN of the souls of the righteous, which had not yet received their correction from the rising to AVI, as said above. And there, in ZON — that is, in the belly of the Nukva — they are depicted and receive their coupling of Katnut.
6And those MAN return and raise, with the joining of ZON, other MAN, and then those are depicted and corrected: The explanation is that now, having already received their coupling of Katnut from ZON, at the second time they rise again in MAN to ZON in order to receive the Mochin of Gadlut, and at this time they already rise by their own force, as said above. Now, at this rising of MAN, which are the souls of the righteous, by their own force, they raise other MAN and sparks — that is, in the same manner explained regarding the rising of the MAN of ZON by their own force — for they take with them the records of the AHP lacking to them, and these records are always composed of two discernments: the first is the discernment of the AHP lacking to the souls of the righteous themselves, and the second is the lower degree of souls into which that AHP fell, as said above. Study it there well. This is what he says: those MAN return and raise, with the joining of ZON, other MAN, and then those are depicted and corrected. For at the time they are fit to rise in MAN by their own force — that is, when they rise in MAN to the coupling of Gadlut — they necessarily take with them the records of the lower degree, in which are found the AHP lacking to them. But the coupling is made only upon the first discernment of the MAN — that is, only upon the discernment of the AHP belonging to the souls — and not upon the discernment of the lower degree in which the MAN are placed, as said above regarding ZON. See there. Rather, that degree needs a second, special coupling of its own, and then the Katnut of the lower degree comes out from the souls. This is why the ARI is precise in saying “and then those are depicted and corrected” — meaning that only the souls are depicted and corrected with the Mochin of Gadlut, but that MAN that rose with them still receive no correction.
